Lafayette (/ ˌlæfiˈjɛt, ˌlɑːf -/ LA (H)-fee-YET, French: [lafajɛt]) is the most populous city in and the parish seat of Lafayette Parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana, [5] located along the Vermilion River.

Lafayette commanded Continental Army troops in the decisive siege of Yorktown in 1781, the Revolutionary War's final major battle, which secured American independence.
