At level 7, for example, ignition deals 4d6 (14) persistent fire damage on a crit, whereas gouging claw would only deal 10 bleed.
If the target is within your melee reach, you can choose to make a melee spell attack with the flame.
You snap your fingers and point at a target, which begins to smolder.
Webyou ignite a creature in lasting flames.
Webignition's persistent damage scales better on crits:
Make a spell attack roll against the target’s ac, dealing 2d4 fire damage on a hit.
Webi was cleaning the character sheet of a player, and i needed to check something about the ignition cantrip.
I think that ignition is a replacement for gouging claw targeted at the magus class, to support the core gish fantasy.
But rather than that being the primary usecase for the spell compared to melee, melee ignition is now the primary usecase:

Webignition ranged damage did get nerfed, no question.
The pc has that spell in his old sheet, and also on his pathbuilder.
